Table Spacing

Round tables take up more space and thus seat less people than rectangular tables.

Served meals require more space around the tables than buffet meals.

Leave at least 5 feet between a seating table and the wall.

Leave about 54 inches between round tables or 10 square feet per person.

Leave about 60 inches between rectangular/banquet tables or 8 square feet per person.

Dance Floor

2-3 square feet per person, assuming that no more than 1/3 of the guests are dancing at any one time.

Band

Make sure there is about 10 square feet per band member

Sign-In Table

Ideally, your registry is located outside the room and a few feet away from the door. You want to avoid having a line of people waiting to sign the registry because they will block the doorway or the area inside the reception room.

Gift Table

This should be placed just inside the door, and should have a bit of "breathing room" to itself. This allows new arrivals to visit the table without squeezing around already seated guests.

Wedding Cake Table

Don't put the cake near the dance floor. Dance floors get crowded and there's a chance someone could fall into your cake. If you can arrange extra space near the head table, you're much better off. Do not put the cake table directly in front of the bridal party so that it doesn't block the view of the guests to the bride and groom.

Kids

If you are inviting children to your reception, you may want to seat them all at the same table. If you have a separate menu for the kids, the servers will know exactly which table to serve the kids menu.

Guests

When deciding on wedding reception floor plans make sure that your guests aren't far away from all of the action. They should at least be close to the head table, dance floor or entertainment.
